International students from Bangladeshi
Uddin, Md. Borhan
Uddin, Md. Borhan, who is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Computer Science and Technology at the College of Computer Science and Software Engineering of Shenzhen University, is passionate about artificial intelligence. His main research focuses on achieving Sim2Real strategy transfer through Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) and applying it to robot systems. "I am conducting research at the National Engineering Laboratory for Big Data System Computing Technology, challenging the gap between simulation and real-world applications, which is the direction I am determined to explore," said Uddin, Md. Borhan.
A continuous academic journey in pursuit of excellence
Uddin, Md. Borhan's academic journey began in Bangladesh. In 2017, he obtained a bachelor's degree in Computer Science and Engineering from Daffodil International University. Subsequently, in 2022, he earned a master's degree from United International University and received an outstanding performance scholarship during his studies. A series of honors have motivated him to pursue excellence further. In September 2022, Uddin, Md. Borhan came to Shenzhen University, where he began his doctoral studies under the guidance of Professor Chen Jie.
The core of Md. Borhan Uddin's research lies in enhancing the transferability of reinforcement learning strategies from simulation to real-world applications in robotic systems. To this end, he has been involved in several cutting-edge projects, such as "Robust Policy Learning for Drones Based on DRL" and "Sim2Real Policy Transfer", all aimed at addressing the adaptability challenges between simulation and real-world scenarios.
Over the past two years, Uddin, Md. Borhan's work has been highly recognized in the academic community. He has co-authored several papers, among which a paper on vision-based drones was shortlisted for the Best Paper Award at the 2023 IEEE International Conference on Advanced Robotics and Mechatronics (ICARM). Additionally, a paper he co-authored on emergency drone landing has been published in the IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering; another co-authored paper on drone strategy learning has been accepted by ICARM 2024. These influential achievements are the best testament to his dedicated research in strategy transfer, especially in the field of robotics.
Uddin, Md. Borhan is also a reviewer for several renowned journals. His academic publications in areas such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and the Internet of Things reflect diverse research interests and have also made a contribution to the field.
Life in Shenzhen has achieved all-round development.
Shenzhen is renowned for its technology, providing me with an environment conducive to academic and personal growth. In the eyes of Uddin, Md. Borhan, Shenzhen is not only captivating for its technological prowess but also for the Chinese culture it harbors, which fascinates him. During his leisure time, he actively participates in events such as the International Cultural Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival, and the Mid-Autumn Festival, immersing himself in the local Chinese culture. Among these experiences, the "Understanding Heyuan City" program stands out as particularly memorable. Exploring Wanlv Lake, interacting with the community in Hunyuan Town, and delving into Hakka culture at the Hakka Cultural Park... These experiences have continuously deepened his appreciation for Chinese culture and provided more "anchors" for his life in Shenzhen.
"Shenzhen University has also provided me with a rich campus life and helped me develop a comprehensive perspective," said Uddin, Md. Borhan. He enjoys participating in various extracurricular and off-campus activities organized by Shenzhen University, which enables him to strike a balance between rigorous research, cultural exploration, and personal growth.
On the road of pursuing dreams, there is always a resolute heart
Uddin, Md. Borhan stated that his trip to Shenzhen was a blend of academic pursuit, cultural integration and career development. Therefore, Uddin, Md. Borhan is extremely grateful to the Shenzhen Universiade International Scholarship Foundation for its sponsorship. "This is an acknowledgement of my efforts and has added an extra impetus to my academic development," he said.
During his pursuit of a doctoral degree, Uddin, Md. Borhan has been consistently striving to advance research in the fields of artificial intelligence and robotics. He aspires to contribute to the outstanding reputation of Shenzhen University in the realm of artificial intelligence research. "My short-term goal is to publish influential papers. I hope to apply my knowledge to real-world problems, especially in industries such as automation, healthcare, and autonomous driving, to enable artificial intelligence to address practical challenges."
Looking at the long-term goal, Uddin, Md. Borhan aspires more to become an outstanding researcher and educator and take on a leadership role to lead and inspire the next generation to jointly promote artificial intelligence research. "I hope that artificial intelligence systems can be seamlessly integrated into the future of all industries, improving their efficiency and safety, and enhancing the quality of human life."
